  2. Slackware LILO Installation HELP file
  3.  
  4. WARNING: As they say in the LILO docs, installing boot 
  5. loaders is inherently dangerous. Be careful out there!
  6.  
  7. These are the options you can use at the Slackware LILO
  8. install menu:
  9.  
  10. 1. Start LILO configuration with a new LILO header.
  11.  
  12.    This choice allows you to start a new configuration 
  13.    file, /etc/lilo.conf, with no OS's entered into it 
  14.    (yet).
  15.  
  16.    You'll first be asked if you want to use an optional
  17.    append="...." line. If you didn't need to use extra 
  18.    parameters at the bootkernel prompt, then you can
  19.    probably just hit ENTER here.
  20.  
  21.    You will be asked where you want to install LILO. This
  22.    can be your Master Boot Record, your root partition's
  23.    superblock (for OS/2's Boot Manager), or to a 
  24.    formatted floppy disk. 
  25.    
  26.    Next, you'll be asked if you want a delay before 
  27.    booting the first OS in your lilo.conf file. This delay
  28.    allows you to hit left-shift and boot any OS in the 
  29.    lilo.conf file by typing in the label you've given it.
  30.  
  31.    Once you've started a new lilo.conf, you must add at 
  32.    least one OS to it before you can install LILO.

  34. 2. Menu choices to add Linux, OS/2, and DOS to the lilo.conf.
  35.  
  36.    These all pretty much work the same way. You'll be asked 
  37.    which partition you want to make bootable (answer 
  38.    /dev/hda1 or whatever partition you wish to use), and 
  39.    you'll also be asked to assign a label to the partition.
  40.    The label can be any short word such as "Linux" or "OS/2"
  41.    that you'll type in later to boot that partition. The boot
  42.    prompt is not case-sensitive, so the user can type LINUX or
  43.    os/2 later on and it will match the labels Linux and OS/2.

  45. 3. Install LILO
  46.    
  47.    Once you've looked at your new config file and are 
  48.    satisfied with the way it looks, pick this choice to 
  49.    install LILO and leave the LILO installation menu.

  52. Other options:
  53.  
  54.   -- Recycle (Reinstall) using your original /etc/lilo.conf.
  55.  
  56.    If you already have an /etc/lilo.conf, and you just need to
  57.    refresh lilo then you don't need to reconstruct your 
  58.    lilo.conf.  Just use this menu choice to reinstall LILO 
  59.    using the existing /etc/lilo.conf.

  62.   -- View your current /etc/lilo.conf
  63.  
  64.    If you haven't begun building a new lilo.conf, this choice
  65.    will let you take a look at the existing one in /etc on your
  66.    root Linux partition.

  68.    If you have begun constructing a new lilo.conf, this option
  69.    will let you view the progress on that.

  72.  -- Skip LILO installation and exit this menu
  73.  
  74.   This option skips LILO installation. Use this if you don't 
  75.   want to install LILO, or if you've already installed it and 
  76.   don't need to reinstall. You have to reinstall LILO whenever
  77.   you change your Linux kernel.

  86. Other LILO information:

  88.   LILO on the Master Boot Record can be removed easily. 
  89.   MS-DOS's fdisk has a /MBR option that restores the master
  90.   boot record. You can actually restore your original boot 
  91.   sector from the copy LILO makes in /boot, as well. This is
  92.   the best way to go about it. See the LILO docs for more 
  93.   information. There is also a '-u' flag to LILO that restores
  94.   the boot sector from the backup copy.  Again, see the LILO
  95.   docs for detailed info.
